May 1, 2007 | OK, ladies, the April/May issue of Bust contains some really interesting advice about "Traveling Broke."
Jessica Lloyd advises "young and foolish girls" how to "see the world on the cheap." Emphasis here on
"foolish."
For in a column entitled, "How to Survive While You're Away," the writer advises young women to make "friends." Certain kinds of friends,
that is,
"There are many ways to get things for free in this world, but the best way is still to exploit a man's everlasting
hope of getting laid.. . . Nobody likes being used, and since you are on a using mission (whoops, I mean, 'on a tight budget'),
you need to offer something in return: stimulating conversation, a dance partner, [oral sex]--whatever your skills are, use them."
It's a bit of a surprise to read this advice in Bust, a hip, third-wave feminist magazine. But then again, perhaps not altogether
such a surprise.
Please do not take this advice! Apart from it not being nice to use people, offering casual sexual favors to strangers in
a foreign country is really dangerous. Only get intimate with men you truly care about and trust. You're worth it.
